Daystar University Awards Internal Research Grants to Faculty

[Athi River, Tue March 4, 2025] Daystar University, through the Directorate of Research, Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship (D-RICE) has awarded internal research grants ranging from Kshs 250,000 to Kshs 760,000, to eight (8) interdisciplinary faculty and postgraduate research teams for the 2024 fiscal year (FY-24).

[Athi River, Tue March 4, 2025] Daystar University, through the Directorate of Research, Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship (D-RICE) has awarded internal research grants ranging from Kshs 250,000 to Kshs 760,000, to eight (8) interdisciplinary faculty and postgraduate research teams for the 2024 fiscal year (FY-24).

The official presentation of the grants was done on March 4, 2025, during the Tuesday Chapel service at Main Campus Athi River.

According to D-RICE Director, Dr. Caroline Ayuya Muaka, the funding initiative aims to: Strengthen interdisciplinary research engagement between faculty and postgraduate students, encourage scholarly activities that will position recipients for future external funding opportunities, and enhance Daystar University’s standing as a center of excellence in teaching, research, and innovation.

The researchers are:

  1. Principal Investigators: Dr. Emmanuel Wamalwa, working with Paul Njoroge, Edwin Osoro, Phillipe Tinega

 

Project: Integration of LiDAR Technology in Precision Agriculture to Enhance Food Security and Poverty Alleviation: A Case Study of the Galana Kulalu Irrigation Scheme (Tana River & Kilifi Counties).

 

  1. Principal Investigators: Mercy Juliet Kanini & Dr. Dorothy Muthoka

Kagwaini.

Project: Green Business Process Management and Organizational Performance: The Case of Daystar University.

  1. Principal Investigator: Prof. Susan Muriungi, working with Julius M. Limbitu & Sarah Malaki.

 

Project: Assessing the Effects of Climate Change on Generalized Anxiety Disorder Among Small-Scale Farmers in Selected Counties in Kenya.

  1. Principal Investigator: Dr. Rodgers Gowon Cherui, working with Dr. Winnie Waiyaki & Grace Wanja.

Project: Trauma and Its Comorbidities Among Teachers in Bandit-Prone Areas of Baringo County: An Assessment

 

  1. Principle Investigator: Dr. Leah Komen, working with Douglas Odhiambo Kasuku, Jane Wacera Kanyari & Edwin Taalam.

 

Project: The Role of Communication Technology in Religious Leaders’ Efforts to Mitigate Climate Change: A Case Study of Churches in Mau and Embobut Forests Water Catchment Areas.

  1. Principle investigator: Harriet Ratemo, working with Dr. Joshua Okemwa & Two Postgraduate Students (To Be Advertised)

Project: A Machine Learning-Based Soil Nutrient Monitoring and Prediction Model for Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience: An IoT-Based Prototype.

  1. Principle Innovator: Fredrick Ogore, working with Tobby Abafanor & Teddy Oloo

Project: Precision Beekeeping: Developing a Low Cost IoT-Based Remote and Self-Sustaining Apiary Monitoring System for Kenyan Farmers.

  1. Principal Investigator: Dr. Emmanuel Wamalwa, working with Edwin Osoro, Paul Njoroge, Philipe Tinega, Henry Mwakazi & Paul Amata.

 

Project: Determinants of Water Accessibility and Their Impact on the Well-Being of Women and Girls in Taita Taveta County.

 

The teams are expected to complete the objectives outlined in their proposals, publish at least two scholarly articles by February 2026, stimulate external funding opportunities and finally provide a comprehensive report on grant fund expenditures within the one-year grant period.

 

Dr. Ayuya announced that the next grant award will be competitive and only those who will have published and attracted external grants will be eligible.
